Start With Cow Flow, Not Square Meters

On a drawing, an outdoor yard may look simple: barn, gate, open space.
In daily operation, however, cows may need to move between:

Other groups may also be moving between pens at the same time.
If these routes cross or become unnecessarily long, staff may need to push cows more aggressively, dominant animals can block timid cows, and congestion develops at gates and intersections.

Does Every Dairy Farm Need a Separate Exercise Area?

Do Not Size the Yard Only From Total Herd Size
A common planning shortcut is to specify a fixed number of square meters per cow and multiply it by the total herd.
That can significantly oversize or undersize the area.
The more useful number is:
How many cows will actually use the exercise area at the same time?
For example, a 500-cow dairy does not necessarily require an exercise yard sized for all 500 cows if cows enter in production groups or only part of the herd uses the area at one time.
A better planning sequence is:
Total herd → Groups using the yard → Peak simultaneous cow number → Required movement space → Final yard area
Benchmarks such as 20–30 m² per cow can still be useful during early planning, but they should be treated as a reference rather than an automatic design rule.
Climate, surface type, duration of use, stocking pattern, manure load, and management method can all change the space requirement.
The First 3–5 Meters Outside the Barn Matter Most
One of the most critical parts of an exercise area is not the center of the yard.
It is the transition between the barn and the outdoor area.
The first several meters outside the entrance receive concentrated hoof traffic every time cows enter or return.

- Holding points
These are also the locations where slipping injuries are most likely to occur.
Drainage Is What Separates an Exercise Yard From a Mud Yard
A large outdoor space quickly becomes unusable if water and manure cannot leave the surface.
Poor drainage causes:
- Mud accumulation
- Slippery footing
- Dirty legs and udders
- Higher cleaning workload
- Hoof exposure to persistently wet conditions
- Difficult machinery access
The yard should therefore be graded so water moves toward planned drainage or manure collection areas rather than back toward the barn entrance.

But simply placing a water trough somewhere inside the exercise yard is not enough.
The trough should not create a dead-end area where dominant cows can block access.
It also should not force cows leaving the yard to cross the path of cows entering.
A good watering location allows cows to:

For larger groups, trough capacity and refill rate also matter. A large trough with slow refill can still become a bottleneck.

It can—if outdoor access is managed poorly.
The problem is not exercise itself.
The problem is lost access time.
For example, if an entire group is pushed outside at once and later returned through a narrow gate, cows may spend significant time:

- Standing in congestion
- Walking unnecessarily
- Away from the feed bunk
That can interfere with the normal feeding routine.
This is particularly undesirable after milking, when cows often return to the feed area.
Where farm layout and management allow, voluntary or flexible outdoor access can reduce this problem because cows do not all have to move through the same gateway at exactly the same time.
Where scheduled access is necessary, the exercise period should be coordinated with:
