System Comparison

Herringbone Parlor vs. Parallel & Rotary Systems: Comparative Analysis

For commercial dairy farms managing 50 to 500 cows, the Herringbone configuration delivers the optimal balance between initial capital expenditure (CAPEX) and long-term operational efficiency.

Feature Herringbone Parlor Parallel (Side-by-Side) Rotary Parlor
Ideal Herd Size 50 - 500 Cows
(The Sweet Spot)
500 - 1,000 Cows 1,000+ Cows
Space Efficiency Excellent. Highly adaptable for retrofitting narrow, existing barns. Good. Requires a wider building layout. Poor. Requires a massive, dedicated circular building.
Milker Visibility & Access Side Access. Allows full visibility of the cow's body and excellent udder inspection. Rear Access only. Visibility is limited to the hind legs and udder. Stationary. Milkers stand in one spot as cows rotate.
Investment Cost per Stall Low ($) Medium ($$) Very High ($$$$)

Technical Evaluation

While Rotary systems suit mega-farms with over 1,000 cows, the Herringbone system ensures superior individual udder visibility and significantly lower maintenance overheads, making it the ideal Turnkey Solution for medium-to-large operations.

Civil & Spatial Engineering Guide

Herringbone Milking Parlor Space Planning & Layout Specifications

A well-designed parlor layout ensures smooth cow traffic and comfortable working conditions for your milkers. One of the greatest advantages of the Herringbone system is its spatial flexibility.

Technical Configuration: 30-Degree vs. 50-Degree Stall Angles

30-Degree Layout

Cows stand at a shallower angle relative to the milker pit. This setup extends the total pit length but provides the operator with maximum side-access visibility for thorough udder inspection and individual animal health monitoring.

50-Degree Layout

A highly compact design where cows stand at a steeper angle. This configuration reduces the required pit length, minimizes the milker's walking distance per shift, and accelerates cow throughput.

Civil Engineering Notes: Site planning must allocate auxiliary space for the Holding Pen (recommended 1.5 to 2.0 sq. meters per cow) and a dedicated, isolated Equipment Room for the vacuum pump unit and milk cooling tanks.

Standard Layout Dimensions Table

Estimates for 30° Layout. Building width includes cow standing area, milker pit, and standard return alleys.

System Size Herd Size Est. Pit Length Est. Building Width
Double-8 (2x8) 100 - 150 Cows ~ 12 Meters (40 ft) ~ 6.5 Meters (21 ft)
Double-12 (2x12) 200 - 250 Cows ~ 17 Meters (55 ft) ~ 6.5 Meters (21 ft)
Double-16 (2x16) 300 - 400 Cows ~ 21.5 Meters (70 ft) ~ 6.5 Meters (21 ft)

Cost & Pricing Guide

Herringbone Parlor CAPEX & Configuration Factors

At NexAgri Solutions, we manufacture our systems and ship factory-direct. Your total capital investment depends on 4 Core Engineering Factors.

A

System Capacity (Stall Count)

The size of your parlor (from a compact 2x4 to a large-scale 2x28) directly determines the amount of heavy-duty galvanized steel framework, food-grade stainless steel milk lines, and the required capacity of the vacuum pump.

B

Automation & Metering Level

You can choose our economical Glass Recorder Jar System (simple, visual, low cost) or upgrade to our advanced Electronic Milk Meter System with ACR (Auto-Cluster Removal) which prevents over-milking and saves labor.

C

Cow Exit System Design

A standard manual exit gate is cost-effective and included. However, upgrading to a Pneumatic Rapid Exit system allows all cows on one side to leave simultaneously, increasing your parlor throughput by up to 30%.

D

CIP Cleaning System

Choosing between a semi-automatic wash system and a fully programmable Auto-CIP (Clean-in-Place) system will affect your initial cost, though Auto-CIP saves significant labor hours every single day.

Long-Term Asset Protection

Our Heavy-Duty hot-dip galvanized steel framework (over 85μm coating thickness) is engineered to withstand decades of harsh farm environments. Your CAPEX is protected by an exceptionally low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and minimal maintenance requirements.

Common Questions from Farm Owners

Click on a question to view the answer.

01 Is a Herringbone Parlor suitable for my herd size?

Ideal for 50 to 500 cows. The Herringbone system offers the best balance of throughput and investment cost. For herds under 500, a Double-12 or Double-16 Herringbone is significantly more cost-effective than a Rotary parlor, while still achieving high efficiency (up to 5 cows per point per hour).

02 Can I retrofit this system into an existing narrow barn?

Yes, this is the #1 choice for renovation. Because cows stand at an angle (30° or 50°), Herringbone parlors fit into much narrower buildings than Side-by-Side (Parallel) parlors. Send us your old barn dimensions, and our engineers will design a custom pit layout to maximize stall numbers within your existing walls.

03 Should I choose 30-degree or 50-degree stalls?

It depends on your preference:
30-Degree: Best for visual observation and easy side-access to the udder. Ideal for herds where individual cow care is a priority.
50-Degree: More compact. Fits more cows into a shorter pit length, reducing the walking distance for the milker.

04 Can I start with Glass Jars and upgrade to Electronics later?

Absolutely. Our Heavy-Duty galvanized framework is modular. Many clients start with the cost-effective Glass Jar System to lower initial investment, and upgrade to Electronic Milk Meters with ACR (Auto-Cluster Removal) years later without changing the steel structure.

05 How difficult is the installation for local teams?

We design for Bolt-Together Assembly (no on-site welding required). We provide detailed 3D installation guides and color-coded parts. For most projects, your local mechanic can install it with our 24/7 remote video supervision. As a provider of comprehensive Turnkey Solutions, we can also dispatch engineers to your site for major installations.

06 What maintenance does a Herringbone system require?

Herringbone parlors are famous for low maintenance costs due to fewer moving parts compared to Rotary systems. Routine maintenance mainly involves changing rubber liners and seals (included in our 2-Year Spares Kit). The hot-dip galvanized structure is maintenance-free for decades.
